Core Award 1: Development of a Campaign and Continuous GPS Array for Atmospheric, Hydrologic, and Seismological Research in the South-Central U.S.

We propose to establish the infrastructure for a continuous Global Positioning System (CGPS) array within Arkansas for meteorological, hydrological, and seismological applications, in keeping with NASA-Earth Science Enterprise objectives. Data will be telemetered to the Geodesy laboratory in the Department of Geosciences at the University of Arkansas and processed in near real-time with subsequent posting to the web for the scientific community. The Arkansas CGPS array will be the foundation for the development of a rigorous research program involving undergraduate and graduate students. The array will provide leveraging resources that will allow us to capitalize on funding opportunities in the future and contribute important new data for regional and global weather, climate, earthquake hazard, and hydrological models. We will act as the support institution for data archiving, processing, and interpretation for campaign and continuous GPS geodetic work conducted throughout the region.

Core Award 2: Synthesis and Characterization of Novel Ferromagnetic Water-bourn Conducting Polymers for Aerospace Application

This project will focus on the synthesis of water-soluble ferromagnetic conducting polymers using naturally occurring renewable resource materials, viz. lignosulfonic acid and tanninsulfonic acid as a component during the polymerization process. Water dispersibility of these polymers will mean obvious economic and environmental advantage, in terms of reduced toxicity and ease of processing. Extensive characterization of the polymers will be performed in view of assessing their potential as coatings for metals and other substrates. Characterization of the relationship between the conductivity and the magnetic susceptibility will be the primary focus.

In addition, completely novel water-soluble polyanilines that also exhibit properties of polyelectrolytes will be synthesized. These polymers will be suited for preparing completely water soluble ferrofluids that also exhibit high solution conductivity.
